Canada manufacturing growth cools in Aug, but employment jumps

China official Manufacturing and Non-manufacturing PMIs(August) coming up today - preview

A rebound in manufacturing sector bodes well for a higher GDP growth rate in the current July-September quarter.

IHS Markit's United Kingdom manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) jumped to 56.9 last month, higher than the 55 that had been expected and above the 55.1 reported in July.

The data, which showed broad-based expansion across all product categories, suggest continuing healthy United Kingdom economic growth and lifted the British Pound, although it quickly lost some of its gains as traders waited for the U.S. non-farm payrolls data.

A Chinese manufacturing index expanded to its highest in six months in August, a private survey showed Friday.

Commenting on the data, Rob Dobson, director of IHS Markit, said: "The key question is whether this positive start to the second half of the year can be sustained". This is looking increasingly likely during the near-term, given the breadth of the expansion. But he cautioned shortages in staff and raw materials could hamper growth in the sector.

Rohingya, including children, drown fleeing Myanmar
The United Nations said 27,000 Rohingyas had fled to Bangladesh since Friday, but Ms Lewa said that was just the beginning. In October a year ago , Rohingya militants attacked several security checkpoints and killed scores of police officers.

Companies reported the strongest intake of new orders since May, bolstered by the weaker pound.

However, s terling's slump has proved a double-edged sword for manufacturers, fuelling demand by making British goods cheaper on global markets while ramping up import costs.

"Indeed, the UK's PMI remained below the eurozone's (57.4) for the fourth consecutive month".

The pick up in growth was driven by a solid increase in new business, the sharpest since May 2014, with export orders also rising for the first time in a year, Reuters reported. The Nikkei India Manufacturing PMI stood at 47.9 in July, down from 50.9 in June, and highlighted the first deterioration in business conditions in 2017 so far. Michael Saunders, who supported an increase, said on Thursday that the risks from Brexit aren't reason enough to hold off on a hike.

The BOE's Monetary Policy Committee voted 6-2 to keep the benchmark rate at a record low last month.
