Dozens of countries sign historic nuke ban treaty at UN

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said as he opened the treaty for signing "because there remain some 15,000 nuclear weapons in existence".

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, or the Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty, is the first legally binding worldwide agreement to comprehensively prohibit nuclear weapons, with the goal of leading towards their total elimination.

Scores of police were soon on the scene but did not appear to be intent on brining the protest to a quick end.

The treaty requires all countries that eventually ratify it not to develop, test, produce, manufacture, otherwise acquire, possess or stockpile nuclear weapons "under any circumstances".

At the same time, Guterres, highlighted the hard road ahead by recalling that there remain some 15,000 nuclear weapons in existence.

According to the press release, the treaty, aimed at banning nuclear weapons, will be ineffective, and will neither lead to the reduction of nuclear arsenals nor contribute to the security of any country.

One student shot, second arrested at IL high school
Police in central IL say a teacher subdued a male student who shot and wounded another student in a high school cafeteria. Authorities believe one student was injured in the incident at Mattoon High School on Wednesday afternoon.

According to him, it will take great effort to really push and get a larger number of countries to accede to the treaty, especially nuclear weapons states.

On the margins of the 72nd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the federal government, has signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. American President Donald Trump told the 193-member UN General Assembly on Tuesday that if threatened, the United States would "totally destroy" the country of 26 million people and mocked its leader, Kim Jong Un, as a "rocket man". She said that with tensions growing between the US and North Korea over the North's nuclear program, the need for the treaty is even greater.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian reiterated his country's position Monday, describing the treaty as "wishful thinking" that is "close to irresponsible". "Signing the United Nations nuclear disarmament treaty marks the difference between washing our hands of responsibility for nuclear war and working to prevent it".

Many world leaders have dedicated a portion of their speeches to the General Assembly this week to addressing the North Korean nuclear threat.

Members approved a resolution that would recognize "the primacy of politics" including mediation, monitoring cease-fires and assisting the implementation of peace accords in the U.N.'s approach to resolving conflicts.
