Hamas says it accepts Abbas's reconciliation demands

Hamas paves way for Palestinian elections as it signals readiness to end Fatah feud

Palestinian group Hamas, which is governing the Gaza Strip, has announced that it's ready to engage in talks with President Mahmoud Abbas' administration to dissolve its administrative committee and hold a general election as part of a reconciliation deal brokered by Egypt.

Hamas agreed to dissolve the administrative committee it had formed in March a year ago to run the daily affairs in the Gaza Strip, the coastal enclave that Hamas has been ruling since it had violently taken control of it in the summer of 2007.

The Palestinian Authority, controlled by Fatah and based in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, fought a war with Hamas over Gaza in 2007, which led to Hamas taking over.

Repeated attempts at reconciliation between the two factions have failed in the past.

This includes holding general elections in the West Bank and Gaza, dissolving a contentious Gaza administrative committee and allowing an Abbas-led "unity government", formed in 2014 but until now unable to start operating in Gaza, to finally assume responsibility there.

The breakthrough came after separate talks in recent days by Hamas and Fatah delegations with Egyptian intelligence officials in Cairo.

"This puts Abu Mazen and Fatah to the real test", Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said in a statement on Hamas' official website.

That goal was at a crucial time for us and gave us a boost and brought us back into a confident zone. All the other things, I can agree or not, but they are irrelevant, to the way I look at my job".

Those reasons, coupled with an escalating sewage crisis that threatens the health of Gaza Strip residents and has ruined the Strip's beaches is contaminating the strip's beaches, and a crippling unemployment, have all contributed Hamas finally, maybe, crying Uncle.

Hamas would like Abbas to lift the various punitive measures he has taken against Hamas in Gaza over the past four to five months including cuts to budgets allocated to Gaza for electricity, medical services, salaries and other purposes.

Gaza has effectively been under siege by Israel since Hamas came to power in 2007, but has received most of its electricity and fuel from Israel ever since, subsidised by the PA.

The official spokesperson reiterated the Government's full commitment to the implementation of the Cairo agreement which was signed by the Palestinian factions.

The Egypt-sponsored talks were held after parallel negotiations between Hamas and Mohammed Dahlan, an exiled senior Fatah leader and Abbas' main political rival.

"Hamas wants to improve the situation in Gaza, but it doesn't want to give up control of it", Bjorn said.
