How Theresa May brokered peace deal with Boris Johnson amid resignation fears

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson arrives at a meeting to discuss the Rohingya situation during the United Nations General Assembly in New York City

Mr Johnson, in NY for the United Nations General Assembly, said: "We are working together, that is the key thing, to make sure that Britain can take advantage of the opportunities of Brexit".

May has called a cabinet meeting for Thursday where she will ask ministers for approval of her speech before delivering it Friday.

The prominent Leave campaigner spoke to TV cameras in NY after bumping into them at a hotel lift as he returned from a jog.

"Markets seem to be thinking that (Boris resigning) would leave (Prime Minister) Theresa May with a freer hand to push through a softer Brexit", said Richard Wiltshire, chief foreign exchange dealer at ETX Capital in London, which he said would be a "positive" for sterling.

Speaking in New York, Johnson was asked by reporters if he planned to resign in footage aired by Sky News.

Speaking to reporters in NY, where he and the prime minister are attending the United Nations General Assembly, Mr Johnson denied that the cabinet was split over Brexit.

It comes amid reports of Cabinet infighting over Britain's divorce from the EU.

Violent Protests Force Ed Sheeran And U2 To Cancel Their Concerts
New rallies are expected to take place in the city Saturday and Sunday, explaining the decision of the police. Riot officers were forced to fire tear gas to disperse the crowds after the demonstrations turned violent.

On a flight to Canada, May dismissed Johnson's actions by saying "Boris is Boris".

It continued: "The Foreign Secretary's close friends believe he will have no option but to walk out of the Cabinet if the Prime Minister advocates permanently paying for access to the single market".

Johson, who was previously the Mayor of London and has been a big name in the Tory party for many years, is opposed to the United Kingdom paying to access the single market, similar to the deal between the European Union and Switzerland.

Mr Johnson and Mrs May are both in NY, but no formal meeting between the two is planned.

Lord Hague, the former Tory leader and foreign secretary, today warned that unless May could unite the cabinet behind her Jeremy Corbyn would end up as prime minister.

This would constitute a direct rejection of one of the key conditions outlined by Johnson in his explosive 4,000-word article about Brexit, published by The Telegraph over the weekend.

The Tory grandee said it was only because Mrs May had failed to secure a parliamentary majority that meant she could not easily fire her Cabinet colleague.
