IRMA: Slowly but surely, power is being restored

1.1 million in Florida still without power after Irma

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has restored power to approximately 4.1 million customers and is working to return power to the 300,000 still without it after Hurricane Irma, the company said in a press release. The company now expects that it will restore service to 95 percent of affected customers by Saturday evening, a day sooner than its earlier projections. As of 2 p.m. Saturday, 1,650 customers in Palm Beach were still without power, or 6 percent. "It's really become house-to-house combat, if you will".

Save a few severe situations, FPL announced that they would have power restored to the east coast of Florida by the end of the day Tuesday. K-Line Construction based out of Woodstock also sent crews to the St. Petersburg area. Every spring the PSC also holds a workshop where utilities update the commission on their hardening progress over the past year.

The populous Miami-Dade County is almost 95% restored, and FPL said it is on track to have restoration essentially complete on Tuesday.

The utility estimated Irma damage included almost 1,500 broken or damaged power poles, 2,400 fallen trees, 450 damaged transformers, and more than 6,000 spans of wire totaling almost 230 miles. Most of those claims are from owners of houses, mobile homes and other residential dwellings.

IRMA: Slowly but surely, power is being restored

In Southwest Florida, where the utility's system took the most direct hit, restoration in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, DeSoto and Hendry counties is almost 85% complete but is still projected to be essentially done on Wednesday.

Real estate researcher CoreLogic estimates flood and wind damage from Irma will run $42.5 billion to $65 billion. "Residents have been coming to the Recreation Center all week", he said.

FPL apologized to customers given misinformation. These sites provide charging stations, water, Wi-Fi, ice, community service and restoration information, and customer service assistance.Visit: FPL.com/powertracker to see locations and times. It is up to the property owners to take care of that debris, such as placing at the curb, McDermitt said.

"Our focus is on restoring power to all of our customers, and we will not be moved by self-entitled politicians who are looking for someone to blame for the City's irresponsibly managed tree program".
