Joe Paterno admitted he heard an earlier Sandusky sexual abuse claim

In a new report Joe Paterno admitted that there had been a previous complaint against Jerry Sandusky

The prosecution was afraid of making the case about Paterno and Penn State rather than Sandusky.

The line in question states that one of Penn State's insurers has claimed "in 1976, a child allegedly reported to PSU's Head Coach Joseph Paterno that he (the child) was sexually molested by Sandusky".

The report, which CNN obtained and released Saturday, says when assistant coach Mike McQueary told Paterno he had seen Sandusky with a young boy in the showers at Penn State's football facility, that the head coach told him it was "was the second complaint of this nature he had received".

McQueary testified in March that Paterno, upon hearing the graduate assistant's allegation in 2001, "slumped back in his chair and put his hand up on his face, and his eyes just kind of went sad".

A Pennsylvania State Police report, provided to CNN by an unnamed source, is the origin of the information.

McQueary's claim of abuse and other allegations is what led to Jerry Sandusky's conviction in 2012 for sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years.

There were also further unsealed court documents from settlements that revealed instances of assistant coaches sharing concerns about Sandusky in both the 1980s and 1990s, the latter was former Rutgers coach Greg Schiano - then a Penn State assistant. He told a grand jury he first heard allegations of Sandusky abusing children from McQueary.

That contradicts Paterno's and his family's vehement denial-and Paterno's sworn testimony-that the coach knew of Sandusky's abuses before McQueary alerted him.

Attorneys for the Paterno family did not respond to CNN's requests for comment.

Paterno, who was sacked in November 2011 as a result of the Sandusky scandal and then died a few months later from lung cancer, had claimed he knew nothing about Sandusky's abuse.

Paterno died in January 2012, less than three months after the scandal came to light.
