One student shot, second arrested at IL high school

Police in central IL say a teacher subdued a male student who shot and wounded another student in a high school cafeteria.

A student at Mattoon High School in Mattoon, Ill.

Authorities believe one student was injured in the incident at Mattoon High School on Wednesday afternoon.

No details have been released about the person in custody or the person who was shot.

School officials said their buildings were on a soft lockdown as a precaution. They are being bused to Riddle Elementary School, where they can be picked up, according to police.

Officials say they learned of an active student shooter on campus just after 11:30 a.m. School resource officers and faculty went to the cafeteria, where they heard shots fired.

'We are saddened that this event has happened and we will provide counseling to students in need, ' the district said in a statement. Mattoon is located about three hours south of Chicago.
