Pence To Visit Texas Amid Devastating Flooding After Hurricane Harvey

Pence has praised rescue efforts in Hurricane Harvey's aftermath.

"And he said, 'just tell them we love Texas, '" Pence said to the crowd's applause.

Pence spoke to a small group of state and local officials as well as community members gathered outside of the badly-damaged church.

Karen Pence then lead the everyone present for the brief remarks in prayer. The vice president was joined by several Cabinet members and shook hands and greeted people outside the storm-damaged church.

Pence will meet with residents, and get a firsthand view of devastation in Rockport which was one of the first places that got hit. Harvey's five straight days of rain totaled close to 52 inches, the heaviest tropical downpour ever recorded in the continental U.S.

Rockport, a coastal fishing town of about 10,000 people, was slammed when Harvey made landfall Friday night as a Category 4 hurricane.

Trump has said he plans to return to the region this weekend to visit Texas and Louisiana.

Pence announced the planned trip Tuesday in an interview with Corpus Christi, Texas radio station KKTX.
