He noted that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro operates a "corrupt regime", and called for the restoration of democracy in the country.

Trump did not repeat that warning but said the U.S. was prepared to take further action, without offering details.

"We're prepared to take further action if the government of Venezuela persists", Trump said.

Trump threatened to build upon sweeping economic sanctions that the USA already slapped on Venezuela last month.

The statement came after Trump railed against the repressive government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro during a speech before the U.N. General Assembly in NY on Tuesday.

At a dinner with Latin American leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Trump called the burgeoning crisis in Venezuela "totally unacceptable" and said the USA was ready to ensure its democracy could be restored.

Trump attacked the regimes of Iran and Venezuela, focusing on Venezuela in particular for human rights violations and attacking the idea that the dire situation Venezuela is facing can be blamed on the poor implementation of socialism.

Crystal Palace 0 Southampton 1: Roy Hodgson's first game ends in defeat
If Palace believe in him as players and as a team, they will be very, very hard to play against after a while. That being said, they are still not playing well and are up against some strong opposition in Southampton .

Their democratic institutions are being destroyed, ' Trump said.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been pushing the country toward autocracy as he struggles to turn around an unprecedented financial crisis spurred by a drop in global oil prices.

"We have told him that military intervention is something that is not on the agenda in any of the countries of Latin America, that would only make it worse", said Santos to the Bloomberg agency.

At a dinner with Latin American leaders on the fringes of the U.N. General Assembly, Trump said the Venezuelan people were starving and their country, once one of the wealthiest, was collapsing.

However, Trump only said that the U.S.is "prepared to take further action" against Venezuela.

Trump will take to the podium at the General Assembly just after Brazil's Michel Temer.

Tens of thousands of Venezuelans have fled the political turmoil as well as widespread shortages of food and medicine and triple-digit inflation.
