Rohingya, including children, drown fleeing Myanmar

44 Rohingya protestors nabbed over illegal rally

AT LEAST 18,000 Rohingya have fl ed across the Myanmar border to Bangladesh over the past week as violence against the minority increases, the International Organisation for Migration said yesterday.

The violence flared up last Friday when Rohingya militants staged more than 30 attacks, including on police stations in the western state of Rakhine.

The Myanmar government says its security forces are carrying out clearance operations in northern Rakhine to defend the country against "extremist terrorists".

"Many thousands of people are increasingly at risk of grave violations of their human rights", she said in a statement.

- In the last three days, 256 women and girls, including 42 survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, have received psychological and other support, while 66 newly-identified unaccompanied children were also receiving help.

Renewed violence erupted on August 25 after dozens of police and border outposts in Rakhine allegedly came under attack by a group claiming to be advocating the Muslim Rohingyas against the government crackdown in Rakhine.

In October a year ago, Rohingya militants attacked several security checkpoints and killed scores of police officers.

A Turkish aid agency has dispatched humanitarian aid to Rohingya Muslims following the reports of mass civilian casualties and displacements in Myanmar's Rakhine state.

Haley condemned recent attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army but added "as Burmese security forces act to prevent further violence, they have a responsibility to adhere to worldwide humanitarian law, which includes refraining from attacking innocent civilians and humanitarian workers". "It is surely time for the UN Security Council, the UN Human Rights Council and other relevant bodies to take stronger collective action by invoking the "Responsibility to Protect" if the Burmese authorities remain unable or unwilling to take action to end this crisis".

The detainees will be sent back to Myanmar later, he added.
