Ryanair scrambles to contain damage from cancellation fiasco

Ryanair

The disruptions to its flights schedule will affect thousands of travellers, including some who are overseas and are expecting to return home with the airline.

Fianna Fáil's Transport Spokesperson Robert Troy is calling on the airline to provide clarity to all customers that could be affected by the disruption to services.

On Friday, the airline blamed a combination of air traffic control delays, bad weather and a backlog in pilots' and cabin crew holiday for the cancellations.

Mr O'Leary said customers whose flights have been cancelled will receive an email by Monday evening.

Deputy Troy says customers need to know where they stand.

"Clearly there's a large reputational impact for which again I apologize".

It added it was "essential that Ryanair release a full list of flights that will be affected so that passengers have as much time as possible to make alternate arrangements".

"We apologize sincerely to the small number of customers affected by these cancellations, and will be doing our utmost to arrange alternative flights and/or full refunds for them", Ryanair spokesman Robin Kiely said.

RYANAIR shares fell by three per cent this morning after the budget airline revealed plans to cancel up to 50 flights a day until the end of October. When we make a mess in Ryanair, we come out with our hands up.

- Prime Minister Theresa May will chair a meeting of Britain's emergency response committee later on Friday, her office said . The UK's current terror threat level is " severe ", the second-highest level, which means "an attack is highly likely".

"We will not be trying to claim exceptional circumstances".

In a statement released today, the no-frills airline said the cancellations would happen over the next six weeks.

"This issue will not recur in 2018 as Ryanair goes back onto a 12-month calendar leave year from January 1 to December 31 2018", Chief Executive Michael O'Leary said.

A "slightly higher number" of flights were cancelled this weekend, and it will bring in additional standby aircraft to help restore punctuality, it said.

Ryanair cancelling many flights at short notice will cause huge inconvenience and great distress for its passengers.

Four Dublin and 11 London flights were among 82 flights cancelled on Sunday.
