Shapovalov knocked out of US Open

Carreno Busta backs Shapovalov to reach the very top

"It's wonderful", the Spaniard said. "I don't think I played as well today as I have been these past two weeks, but, I mean, that's tennis". The atmosphere is unbelievable. "I can't describe it".

Teen sensation Denis Shapovalov's run at the 2017 US Open is over after losing his round of sixteen match to 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta.

Perhaps luckily he found himself in the much weaker half of the draw but regardless of that he still found himself against former World #5 Jo Wilfried Tsonga in the second round but shocked the world dispatching of the Frenchman in straight sets.

After winning three qualifying matches and three main-draw matches, Shapovalov had his chances in the fourth round.

With his explosive style, attacking game and outgoing character, Shapovalov has quickly become a favourite with the fans.

"My goal is to raise the level of Canadian tennis and just have more kids picking up a racquet instead of a hockey stick", he said. "He's awesome, he's learning quickly, he believes in himself", McEnroe said.

Shapovalov was aggressive from the start.

For all his exciting talent, however, Shapovalov needs to learn when to go for his shots and when to bide his time. If Carreno Busta can regularly find his down the line backhand with pace, it could prove terminal for Shapovalov.

Shapovalov, whose distinctive reverse baseball cap look even spurned the term "the Shapo" on social media, leaves NY with just one regret - that his parents were unable to see him play on the sport's biggest arena.

NJ Sends National Guard to help Texas

The 18-year-old Shapovalov had trouble recovering after blowing a 5-2 lead in the first set.

Shapovalov has impressed throughout this tournament and he did again here, but his opponent's experience showed in the key moments.

However, the qualifier's dream was ended by wily Spanish 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta, eight years his senior, in three tiebreak sets, 7-6, (7/2), 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/3). The packed crowd, which heavily favored Shapovalov, was treated to a competitive two-hour, 54-minute battle. While Shapovalov was better on his first serve, second serve points made a difference as the Canadian only managed 42 percent of his second serve points while Carreno Busta won 60 percent. He played on Arthur Ashe in his last two matches and won four matches on the stadium court in Montreal.

A third tiebreak came and once again, the Spaniard took it.

After double-faulting on the first point, Shapovalov was soon 4-0 down. Carreno Busta saved three set points, cruised in the tiebreaker and then controlled the early part of the second set before Shapovalov rallied to force another tiebreaker. Shapovalov will be left to regret only converting three of his 13 break point opportunities. He will be back for sure. There is a lot of noise, and you think the people is behind you, but I just tried to be focused on the match. Every point was important for me.

"I think I'm making an impact and hopefully I can continue to do so because for me, the best thing in life is to see kids like this looking up to you and just aspiring to be like you".

Carreno Busta will face either No. 16 Lucas Pouille or No. 29 Diego Schwartzman next.

Carreno Busta has been moving through the draw quietly but efficiently, away from the media glare that has focused on Shapovalov. "I don't know. I don't think there is one specific moment that changed the match". I served really good.
