Sharapova crashes out of US Open

Rafael Nadal of Spain celebrates his victory over Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine during the US Open

The 37-year-old has been in excellent form at the U.S. Open so far and was extremely comfortable in getting past Maria Sakkari in the previous round.

The match may not be pretty and there will be errors aplenty from the Russian's racket but she will not go quietly; there is a place in the quarter-finals of the US Open to fight for, after all. On Friday, September 1, Sharapova put on another splendid show to beat Sofia Kenin 7-5, 6-2.

Sharapova fought off three match points before a big first serve left the five-time major victor flailing at a return that flew wide after two hours and 17 minutes.

Sharapova, meanwhile, is playing in her first Grand Slam tournament after serving a 15-month doping ban.

The 18-year-old Shapovalov was bidding to become the youngest U.S. Open men's quarterfinalist since Andre Agassi was also 18 in 1988.

But he fell to the highest-seeded player left in his half of the men's draw. He next faces either No. 16 Lucas Pouille or No. 29 Diego Schwartzman.

It's been hard to gauge exactly where Sharapova is at since her fine win over Simona Halep in the first round and the Russian had failed to take any of her opening matches in straight sets.

No. 12 seed Pablo Carreno Busta leads the Canadian teenager 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) in the only match going on in Flushing Meadows. Instead of No. 8-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, or Englishman Kyle Edmund, who performed well here last August, he'll be facing the long-haired, baby-faced, 18-year-old Shapovalov, who was one of nine qualifiers to win their opening matches and one of seven unseeded players still alive. Carreno Busta saved three set points, cruised in the tiebreaker and then controlled the early part of the second set before Shapovalov rallied to force another tiebreaker.

Venus Williams, of the United States, serves to Maria Sakkari, of Greece, during the third round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, in NY.

Sharapova faces Latvian Anastasija Sevastova at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Round of 16 at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Because of rains that started late Saturday and continued into Sunday morning, play on all outer courts was not to begin before noon.

Read on for the standout matches from Sunday's afternoon bracket and a look ahead to what should be a day to remember in NY. But this year at the U.S. Open, slightly less vertically gifted is making himself at name.

Sevastova overcame a tight first set loss to win the final two and claim her second straight quarterfinal berth at the US Open. The tournament directors, sponsors and fans have welcomed the game's most marketable female star and the tall Russian, who turned out in a black dress embedded with crystals for her Grand Slam return, has oozed glamour and gumption in NY.

There's plenty of power players left on the women's side, including No. 3 seed Garbine Muguruza facing No. 13 Petra Kvitova in a matchup for former Wimbledon champions.

Sevastova will play unseeded American Sloane Stephens next.
