Trump to Scrap Obama-Era Dreamers Program 'as Early as Tomorrow'

From Facebook to Microsoft: How the world's biggest tech firms reacted to Trump's plan to end DACA

A senior administration official told Fox News that Trump will live up to his campaign pledge to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, but he could allow some of those affected to remain in the US for the duration of their work permits - a duration that could be as long for some as two years.

An announcement could come as soon as Friday, just days before a deadline imposed by 10 states that threatened to sue the US government if it did not stop protecting people brought into the country illegally as children. Essentially, children who grew up in the US after migrating illegally would be offered a chance to stay up to two more years in the USA with the chance to be offered a work visa.

- President Trump is expected to announce plans to end President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which had halted the deportation of certain young undocumented immigrants, a senior administration official told Fox News.

On Wednesday's Radio Times, guest-host Mary Cummings-Jordan talked to Maria Sotomayor, a DACA recipient who works with immigrants in the state as deputy director of Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition.

In June, however, a group of Republican attorneys-general from 10 states threatened to sue the federal government if it did not rescind DACA by September 5.

President Donald Trump is reportedly considering ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program despite objections from his staff and from business leaders.

During Thursday's press briefing, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders denied reports that the White House has decided on the fate of the so-called "Dreamers" program.

"Protecting unauthorized immigrants from deportation led to immediate and sizable improvements in the mental health of their USA citizen children", the report said.

Reporter Crystal Chavez with Orlando's WMFE joins Gulf Coast Live to share her reporting on DACA students in Central Florida, how their campuses are responding to a possible end to DACA, and other immigration and racial issues on campus.

The vice president also stood firm on Trump's signature promise to build a wall on the U.S. -Mexico border, echoing a position Trump delivered at a campaign rally in Phoenix last week - that he would be willing to let the federal government shut down if appropriations for the wall were not included in a spending bill to fund the government. "Hence, policymakers have struggled to make informed decisions about the future of DACA", says Linna Martén, a postdoctoral scholar at the Stanford Immigration Policy Lab and co-author of a new study examining the intergenerational effects of DACA.

Noting how the GOP-led Florida Legislature passed a bill several years ago allowing such students to get in-state tuition, Castor says that Florida has invested in these students, and says it would be a huge mistake for the President to turn his back on them now. We recognize their enormous role in our communities and families and their contributions to our schools, workplaces, and shared prosperity as a nation.

"These Dreamers have only ever called one country home: the United States of America". It was that he was going to end DACA.

The emotional editorial recalls Trump's assertion to deal with DACA recipients "with heart", urging him to keep it in place.

Borovska said if DACA is scrapped, many Dreamers will leave their traditional jobs and form their own businesses to work as independent contractors.

However, Borovska said, the Trump administration may step up its I-9 audit program to cover more ground and surveil businesses.

"If the litigation is brought, the normal response from a president who has said he supports the program would be to defend DACA in court", he said.
