Violent crime rising throughout US, FBI says

Chicago Police officers and community members gather in a prayer during a rally supporting efforts to stop violence in Chicago in July 2017

The FBI's Uniform Crime Report program, which collects crime data from police departments across the country, found that violent crime increased by 4.1 percent in 2016, along with an 8.6 percent increase in homicides.

There were about 16,500 homicides across the country in 2016 - an increase of 1,278 year-over-year - but those make up just 1 percent of the 1.2 million violent crimes reported.

The historic trend of decreased violent crime rates is even more pronounced when compared with two decades ago, when the violent crime rate was 611.

"For the sake of all Americans, we must confront and turn back the rising tide of violent crime. And we must do it together", said Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has made crime-fighting a centerpiece of his tenure.

The Brennan Center for Justice, a New York-based law and policy institute, said Monday that the murder rate increase was fueled by an uptick in killings in some of the country's largest cities - with Chicago accounting for more than a fifth of the nationwide murder increase past year.

The rates of violent crimes reported to municipal police agencies rose in several communities previous year, including in the Village and Town of Hamburg, Lockport, Niagara Falls, North Tonawanda, Orchard Park, the City of Tonawanda, Evans, the Town of Niagara and West Seneca.

"There were dire predictions of a crime wave and calls for draconian policies", he said.

Arsene Wenger Talks Jack Wilshere Contract, Jonny Evans
A possible crossroads, if you like, where things could go backwards, sideways, or hopefully onwards after a slow and shaky start. Arsenal have won each of last six Premier League home meetings against West Brom - scoring 13 goals and conceding just one.

The increase was driven by an uptick in several major cities, including Chicago, Baltimore and Las Vegas.

In other cities, there were declines, including NY, the country's largest city, which reported 335 murders last year, down from 352 a year earlier and less than half the 673 murders reported in 2000. Fordham University law professor John Pfaff pointed out that "five neighborhoods in Chicago explain 10 percent of the national increase in homicide rates", NBC reported. The rate of serious violent and property crimes is at its lowest level since 1966. Small towns experienced a significant increase in homicides, but it was still less than half of that seen in big cities (8.4% vs. 20.3%).

Therefore, Pfaff says, when President Trump rhetorically asked repeatedly what's going on in Chicago, the answers are concentrated in nine percent of the city's population, and not prone to national analysis or easy answers. The city is continuing that this year, with 192 murders reported through September 17, down from 250 at the same point a year earlier.

This year's hike by 49,000 means about 13 more violent crimes for every 100,000 people living in the United States.

The number of reported rapes fell by 14, from 95 to 81.

The FBI's annual report, which is based on data submitted by police departments and other law enforcement agencies, lags by about nine months.

Experts say the Federal Bureau of Investigation report is not an exact measurement of local crime because local agencies often reclassify incidents during the year.
