Violent Protests Force Ed Sheeran And U2 To Cancel Their Concerts

St. Louis protest forces closure of Kingshighway as marchers roam and projectiles thrown at police

New rallies are expected to take place in the city Saturday and Sunday, explaining the decision of the police.

The verdict resulted in protests throughout St. Louis. U2 was supposed to perform at The Dome at America's Center on Saturday.

A concert by the famous irish rock band U2 led by Bono, has been cancelled Saturday, September 16, at St. Louis in the United States, where the police said the overloaded of work because of protests from the day before, after the acquittal for murder of a police officer, tells AFP.

Police were prepared for a second night of protests after Friday's demonstrations led to several clashes - including rocks thrown at a police vehicle and objects tossed at officers in riot gear - and culminated when protesters broke a window and spattered red paint on the home of Mayor Lyda Krewson.

A statement from U2's concert promoter, Live Nation, said "We have been informed by the St Louis police department that they are not in a position to provide the standard protection for our audience as would be expected for an event this size".

Demonstrators have been protesting a judge's ruling Friday clearing ex-officer Jason Stockley of first-degree murder in the 2011 shooting of 24-year-old Anthony Lamar Smith.

"We can not in good conscience risk our fans' safety by proceeding with tonight's concert". "Although we do so with regret, the cancellation is according to us the only acceptable outcome in the current environment".

Stockley insisted he saw Smith holding a gun and felt he was in imminent danger. Ten officers have already been injured and 32 people were arrested.

Prosecutors said Stockley planted a gun in Smith's vehicle after the shooting.

Smith's death is just one of several high-profile USA cases in recent years in which a white officer killed a black suspect, including the 2014 killing of Michael Brown in nearby Ferguson that sparked months of angry and sometimes violent protests. Riot officers were forced to fire tear gas to disperse the crowds after the demonstrations turned violent.
