West Indies wins toss, bowls in 3rd ODI vs. England

Chris Gayle run out for 94

The biggest concern for West Indies ahead the 3rd ODI was the injury scare for their swashbuckling opener Chris Gayle.

Stokes hit Ashley Nurse for back-to-back sixes but succumbed to Rovman Powell before Miguel Cummins (3-82) bowled Jos Buttler with a beauty and removed Root to leave England 217-6. It was the third ODI between England and West Indies at Bristol.

"Moeen Ali s innings was the difference between the sides, certainly with the batting anyway", he said.

He should have been out for 87 when he smashed a Jerome Taylor full toss to point only for Gayle to drop the catch at point.

As remarkable as this innings was, it really should not have come as a surprise.

England leads the five-match series 1-0, winning the first game before the second was abandoned because of rain.

Joe Root (84) made a more studied bid for the headlines, posting most runs across all formats in an English worldwide summer as he and Ben Stokes (73) first hinted at a formidable total in their fourth-wicket stand of 132 after West Indies won the toss on a cloudy morning.

At Twitter, meanwhile, executives from its Washington DC office will appear before the Senate committee investigating Russian interference in the election.

But Moeen's alliance with Chris Woakes saw the seventh-wicket pair add 117 in 12.4 overs as England laid waste to the West Indian death bowling.

Root broke Graham Gooch's record (1277) for the most worldwide runs in an English summer during another classy knock, putting on 132 for the fourth wicket with Stokes.

In all both teams produced 28 sixes between them, a record for an ODI in this country.

The Worcestershire all-rounder sprinted to his hundred off 53 balls, with almost half of his runs coming via eight sixes, before he fell for 102.

Still, they recovered to post a total that dwarfed the previous best in ODIs at this ground of 329. Ali made a decision to neutralize the best West Indies had.

That left the Windies 176 for four in the 27th over, still 194 shy of victory.

But his sluggish running between the wickets when he was stranded six runs shy of three figures following a direct hit from Adil Rashid at cover.
