A Record High 64% of Americans Say Cannabis Should be Legal

Poll: 64 percent of Americans support legalizing marijuana

According to the Gallup organization, the trend is hard to miss: "As efforts to legalize marijuana at the state level continue to yield successes, public opinion, too, has shifted toward greater support".

More Americans than ever think marijuana should be legal, according to a new Gallup poll that found a majority of Republicans supporting legalization for the first time ever. But a new Gallup poll did reveal a somewhat surprising demographic supports marijuana legalization more than ever: Republicans. To put that in perspective, only 12% of Americans supported legalization that year.

"It makes sense that support for ending marijuana prohibition is increasing", Morgan Fox of the Marijuana Policy Project said in a statement.

Seventy-two percent of Democrats support legalizing marijuana at the federal level, and a majority have supported legalization since 2009. Many other states allow marijuana use for medicinal purposes under laws with varying degrees of strictness. 51 percent of GOP respondents supported making cannabis legal to purchase, a noticeable spike compared to 42 percent in 2016.

"An overwhelming majority of Connecticut residents support regulating and taxing marijuana", said Sam Tracy, director of the Connecticut Coalition to Regulate Marijuana.

Past year - in advance of nine states voting on legalization measures, eight of which passed - Americans favored legalization at a level of 60 percent.

"Marijuana policy liberalization over the past 20 years has certainly been associated with increased marijuana use; however, policy changes appear to have occurred in response to changing attitudes within states and to have effects on attitudes and behaviors more generally in the U.S." the study stated. "On both issues, about a quarter supported legalization in the late 1990s, and today 64% favor each", Gallup writes in its analysis of the poll. Even larger majorities of independents (67 percent) and Democrats (72 percent) are in favor of legal marijuana.

The federal government considers marijuana a Schedule 1 substance with no known medical benefits, but the Trump administration has refrained so far from interfering in states with medical and recreational marijuana laws in place.
