Alibaba to launch US$15bn R&D campaign

Alibaba will more than double research and development spending to $15 billion over the next three years to develop next-generation technology, drive its sprawling business and explore moonshot projects that could upend industries.

According to Alibaba's Chief Technology Officer Jeff Zhang, "The Alibaba DAMO Academy will be at the forefront of developing next-generation technology that would spur the growth of Alibaba and our partners".

The research programme will be called the Alibaba DAMO Academy, short for Discovery, Adventure, Momentum and Outlook.

The Alibaba "Damo" academy is planning to establish eight research centers in different countries including China, Russia, USA, Israel, and Singapore.

At the Computing Conference 2017 in Hangzhou today, Alibaba's executive chairman Jack Ma said he envisions the DAMO Academy as being created to "solve the problems of the future", and sees the academy as going "beyond IBM and Intel and Microsoft, because it's born in the 21st century and will take the late-mover advantage".

The company plans to set up seven laboratories and hire 100 scientists around the world to embark on more research into artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and quantum computers. Moreover, they will include quantum computing as well as human-machine interaction, including Natural Language Processing and machine learning. All of the facilities will be overseen by an advisory board consisting of some of the best researchers and professors at leading universities, including MIT.

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.is putting a lot of cash behind its goal of serving 2 billion customers and creating 100 million job opportunities over the next two decades.

The Chinese giant and its affiliates have undergone a rapid expansion in the past year, bringing it into direct competition with United States e-retailer Amazon.com Inc., as well as global payments, cloud and logistics firms.

Alibaba, as a company, has also been aiming to convince talented and ambitious researchers to join their program, which would enhance the technical expertise of the program.
