California becomes a 'sanctuary state' to protect immigrants from Trump administration

California passes 'sanctuary' state law limiting collaboration between police and ICE

California became the first "sanctuary state" for undocumented immigrants Friday, a decision criticized by the Trump administration which believes the move will compromise security.

The new law will also permit local law enforcement officers to communicate with federal agents about detainees with felony convictions in the past 15 years as well as those awaiting trial for serious felonies for which a judge has found probable cause - and to coordinate transfers of those people into federal custody.

"They are free to use their own considerable resources to enforce federal immigration law in California", Brown wrote.

Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones asked Homan for help fighting the so-called sanctuary state bill weeks before the two hosted a town hall meeting in March on immigration enforcement that erupted in protests.

"The national agenda is a racist agenda, let's not sugar coat it", Assemblyman Miguel Santiago, D-Los Angeles, said to chants of "Si, se puede", or "Yes, we can", at a press conference in Los Angeles announcing the signing of Senate Bill 54, the California Values Act.

His statement underscores the stakes of the state's resistance to Donald Trump - given the millions of unauthorized immigrants who live here and have been given assurances of protection by Brown.

Trump administration slammed California for passing the bill, raising concerns over "criminal aliens".

Yankees' Girardi on Game 2 loss: 'I feel disgusting about it'
I know his knees hurt at times and they're a little creaky, but, no, he's a really good athlete and he can manipulate the ball. Sabathia was only at 77 pitches, he wasn't falling apart, and the Yankees had a five-run lead.

The bill severely limits the scope of federal authorities, such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE, to receive immigrants' information from local or state-level authorities.

"ICE will have no choice but to conduct at-large arrests in local neighborhoods and at worksites, which will inevitably result in additional collateral arrests", Homan said in a statement.

Last month, Sessions called California's sanctuary state bill "unconscionable".

Instead, the officers must try to arrest them at their homes or jobs out in the community - where their family or other illegal immigrants around them could also be arrested. It is the signature piece of a package of 11 bills establishing protections for undocumented residents of California.

Throughout his campaign and in his tenure as president, Trump has tried to make the same connection, showcasing the relatives of people killed by immigrants in the country illegally. Brown on Thursday, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump's administration is spending every day trying to find a path forward on immigration.

"California's local law enforcement can not be commandeered by the Trump administration and used to tear families apart, undermine our public safety and wreck our economy", De Leon said. "This bill strikes a balance that will protect public safety while bringing a measure of comfort to those families who are now living in fear every day". Brown also said that the bill does not prohibit local sheriffs from cooperating with deportation proceedings from federal immigration officers or letting them into their jails to conduct interviews.
