Danish Submarine Owner Admits Dismembering Body Of Swedish Journalist Police

Kim Wall (left) and Peter Madsen (right).

In a grisly case worthy of a Nordic noir thriller, Copenhagen police inspector Jens Moller Jensen told reporters that divers had found bags containing her missing clothes, her head and legs in Koge Bay, south of the Danish capital. The bags also contained pieces of metal to weigh them down. Wall's arms are still missing. The inventor denies the charges against him.

A Danish inventor has admitted dismembering a female journalist who he invited on board his home-made submarine, at the same time as offering a new explanation for her death. He denies the charge and told police she died from carbon monoxide poisoning inside the submarine while he was on the deck of the vessel.

Wall's arms as well as her and Madsen's mobile phones are still missing and the police are now assessing if divers should continue the search for them.

Prosecutors believe Madsen killed 30-year-old Wall as part of a sexual fantasy, then dismembered and mutilated her body.

Madsen, 46, is a self-taught aerospace engineer who was one of the founders of Copenhagen Suborbitals, which is dedicated to building submarines and manned spacecraft.

And his homemade submarine Nautilus, launched in 2008, was the biggest private sub ever made when he built it with help from a group of volunteers.

Wall's boyfriend first reported her missing in the early morning hours of August 11. when she didn't return home from her meeting with Madsen. Police believe Madsen and Wall did not know each other before their trip.

Her boyfriend raised the alarm the next day when she did not return from the trip. He said he had buried her at sea. After her body was found, however, he changed his story, telling authorities she died after the submarine's hatch accidentally fell on her head. Her torso was found with multiple stab wounds.

Wall, a writer for publications including Harper Magazine, departed with Peter Madsen aboard his self-built submarine on August 10 with plans to write on the inventor's work.

Madsen - well known in Denmark for his work on the Nautilus - has been charged with murder, mutilation of a corpse and sexual assault without intercourse.

Locating Ms Wall's head had been crucial to investigators, as the final autopsy on the torso had been unable to establish the cause of death.
