Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg to meet with Russian Federation investigators on Capitol Hill

Google Finds Accounts Connected to Russia Bought Election Ads

Google now runs the world's largest online advertising business. Last month, Facebook disclosed it had unearthed $100,000 in spending for about 3,000 ads by the Internet Research Agency.

Earlier reports said Russian operatives bought ads across several of Google's services without the company's knowledge, in the latest evidence that their campaign to influence USA voters was wide-reaching and sophisticated, deploying the technology industry's most powerful tools.

Twitter and Facebook have said Russian Federation bought ads and had accounts on their platforms.

According to sources at Google, the ads on its various platforms, which include Gmail, YouTube and its Double Click ad network, were not purchased by the same Russian entity that bought the ads on Facebook.

What's more, the Washington Post report - which cites unnamed sources - says the Russian agents appear to be different from the ones who bought ads on Facebook. However, Google's investigation has not found any evidence that the Russian ads used these categories or geographic parameters to target specific groups, the person said.

In a statement, a Microsoft spokesman told Gizmodo it had received reports indicating possible involvement and would take appropriate action if it turns out Russians did purchase ads on Bing, though they did not confirm whether it had found anything.

Google is the only company that sells more digital advertising than Facebook, and its role in the coordinated Russian campaign has been closely followed.

Recently, Facebook has done some changes in its advertising programs, adding strict rules in choosing ads destination and other information, especially related to politics and religion.

Russia's ad purchases on Google, owned by Alphabet Inc.

A spokesperson for Google said the company was "taking a deeper look to investigate attempts to abuse our systems, working with researchers and other companies", and that it would "provide assistance to ongoing inquiries". Both lawmakers and Facebook representatives have said that the apparent goal of the ads was to amplify political discord by exploiting tensions over hot-button political issues like race, immigration and gun rights.

Twitter has said that it has shut down 201 accounts associated with the Internet Research Agency.

Twitter has not said how many times the Russian disinformation was shared. He said the release will probably not come before a November 1 public hearing the committee is holding with executives from Facebook, Twitter and Google.

Otherwise, though, Facebook has not released copies of the ads for public viewing.
