Google is going to stop punishing news sites that have paywalls

Google unveils new moves to boost struggling news organizations

Google is ending its controversial policy requiring publishers to offer at least a few news stories for free or risk their ranking in search results - and further sweetening the deal by sharing user data for easier subscription signups and offers.

During the last 10 years, Google had adopted a policy of first free click to its users.

This year, the Wall Street Journal stopped abiding by Google's policy, corresponding to a drop in search rankings but an increase in subscriptions.

Google has worked with publishers to develop the new policies and says it has observed long-term tests with The New York Times and Financial Times, which both operate paywall subscription models, and it's endorsed by The New York Times. With sites like The Wall Street Journal and others enabling paywalls to view their content, this policy was meant to increase sales of these services to some extent.

Shares of companies like New York Times Co., News Corp. Google has a hard courtship publicly with other online publishers as well.

"Google appears honest in its intent to help publishers drive more subscriptions", said Greg Sterling, vice president of strategy and insights at the Local Search Association.

Google over the years has expanded its original focus to undertake everything from developing a mobile phone operating system to carrying out experimental projects, including development of autonomous vehicle technologies. "Publishers are in the best position to determine what level of free sampling works best for them", Richard Gingras, Google's vice president of news, wrote in a blog post.

Ryanair to cancel flights affecting 400000 more passengers
These include Stansted to Edinburgh and Glasgow, Gatwick to Belfast, Newcastle to Faro and Glasgow to Las Palmas. It said it expected the cost of the free flight vouchers issued to affected customers to cost it around €25m.

This is the most significant step by Google to appease the news groups that provide information for the search engine but have been losing ad revenue.

Additionally, Google's working on making the subscription process simpler.

The objective is to provide fast purchases at a single click, said by Gingras. According to Gingras, Google is also looking at ways to use machine learning to help publishers spot likely subscribers and target them with more effective subscription offers.

The move could help them boost subscriptions whilst retaining more control over their business models.

The relationship between Google and publishers is complex.

Google and Facebook are expected to hoover up the majority of digital advertising spend in the United Kingdom for the first time this year as print advertising declines. This will let publishers decide how much content readers can freely access from search results. The goal is to help publishers identify possible subscribers and build a better subscription model, Google said.
