Google Maps pulls cupcake calorie counter after backlash

Google Maps Shows Walking Distance As Calories And People Are Pissed

In an apparent effort to encourage people to walk rather than drive, Google Maps started showing alternative walking directions when short driving directions were requested, complete with a note on how many calories you'd burn during the walk.

Google already confirmed that it's removing the feature. Not only that, but the feature also revealed how many pink "mini cupcakes" in equivalent calories they would burn. The calories were communicated in equivalence to the amount of "mini cupcakes". The online backlash was mainly regarding the effects this feature could cast on users with eating disorders. In addition to a general feeling that the app was shaming or judgemental, individuals expressed concerns that it could have a negative effect on people with past or present eating disorders and that, because everyone's metabolism is different, the values were not usefully accurate.

Google is ditching a planned feature for Maps following criticism on social media.

A civilian also died in firing by security forces on a mob that had taken to the streets to protest the death of the militants. According to local Kashmiri media, the protesters raised high-pitched anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.

While the feature was not groundbreaking in innovation, having been built into other mapping apps such as Citymapper for a while, Google googl has had such "strong user feedback" that the calorie estimator will no longer appear in Google Maps for iOS, according to TechCrunch.

On the Google Maps app, it says the "average person" burns 90 calories by walking one mile, but it doesn't elaborate further on that definition. Another fix for the issue is by making the feature better by adding personalised elements like age, height, weight, and gender. Someone else wrote, "Anyone else feel like the google maps mini cupcake feature reinforces the idea that all exercise must be atonement for the sin of eating?"
