Kremlin warns US against restrictions on Russian media

On Wednesday, Putin met OPEC officials and said a deal between OPEC and rival oil producers to reduce production could be extended to the end of 2018, a longer timeframe than others have suggested. The Moscow meeting between the two leaders is seen by analysts as a venue to deepen the relationship and, in the near term, allow the Saudis to nudge Russian Federation toward extending the pact.

"When we decide on whether to extend or not, we will decide on the time frame; but on the whole, if speaking about a possible extension, this should be at least until the end of 2018".

Russian analysts say that King Salman is seeking to diversify Saudi alliances because of uncertainty over Donald Trump's Middle East polices.

According to Mercouris, Russia "is able to help the Saudis on questions like oil, like Syria, like future relations with the other countries in the region with which Saudi Arabia has so many difficulties".

Al Arabiya has announced that Saudi Arabia and Russian Federation agree to purchase S-400 missile defence system.

Several investment deals are expected to be negotiated.

The Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin has already said Riyadh was showing interest in buying Russian missile systems.

"We have many friends in America who want to develop ties with us", he said at the forum.

Russia's Rosoboronexport and the Saudi military consortium signed a memorandum on the manufacturing rights of Russian military equipment in Saudi Arabia.

The two have profound disagreements on Syria - where more than 330,000 people have been killed since war erupted in 2011 - and Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition has been bombing Houthi rebels since 2015, drawing criticism from Moscow.

King Salman is expected to ask Russia's support and commitment to ensure that the production cuts deal continues, following Saudi Arabia's cut of its output to around 10 million barrels per day to help control a glut in world oil supplies.

The commentator further pointed out to Russia's willingness to establish contacts with all sides in the Middle East in order to find solutions for regional problems.

Almost a year into the production-cut deal that brought together major OPEC and non-OPEC oil producers, Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said there was no pressure on Iran to join the cuts.

King Salman even brought his own furniture along to the luxury hotels booked by the Saudi government for the visit.

Saudi Arabia has agreed to invest $1bn in Russian energy projects, while Russian petrochemicals giant Sibur will build a plant in Saudi Arabia in a separate $1.1bn agreement.
