Okorocha's Unveiling of Jacob Zuma Statue 'Embarrassing,' Group Says

South African President Jacob Zuma was on Friday evening conferred with a chieftaincy title in Owerri Imo State

Several netizens on Twitter wondered what Zuma has done for Imo State or Nigeria to merit such honour, while others noted that despite the role the country played to bring the apartheid regime in South Africa to an end, Nigerians were being killed in the country on a regular basis and Zuma had done nothing to check that.

Still others questioned why the Imo State governor chose to erect a statue of a South African leader rather than a notable Nigerian.

As part of the welcome package from the Imo State Governor, a road was named in honour of President Zuma, as well as the President being conferred with a Chieftaincy title.

According to the Presidency the visit to Nigeria was to "strengthen socio-economic relations and deepen cooperation in education".

South Africa's President, Mr. Jacob Zuma, has called for unity among African states, noting that this would enable the continent to rub shoulders with its peers.

It also expressed strong displeasure at the heroic treatment given to him by Okorocha, describing the governor's gesture as an embarrassment to the All Progressives Congress, which was fighting corruption.

We don't have them anywhere in Nigeria and now we have the statue of President Jacob Zuma.

An honorary title was also bestowed on Zuma.

"Is Governor Okorocha not aware that Mr. Zuma has been found guilty of corruption by the courts in South Africa and has been ordered to refund the $500,000 stolen from the public treasury to expand his private house to accommodate his many wives? That is why in our era, we have a government that will begin to make economic laws, because if the economic power is not there, there is very little you can do for the poor and the oppressed".

Governor Okorocha had asides erecting the statue, named a road after Zuma, who is now facing multiple corruption charges in South Africa. "It's not the best PR exercise, if you ask me", said Adetunuji Omotolo, a representative of the group.
