Over half million Rohingya fled Myanmar, 2000 per day, says UN

The Rohingya refugee crisis is considered the "world's fastest-growing refugee emergency" after beginning to flee August 25, stated Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General.

Haque, who met Foreign secretary S Jaishankar in the Capital on Thursday evening, was also hopeful of India's support to Bangladesh in the wake of the refugee crisis.

"This flow out of Myanmar has not stopped yet, it's into the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya (who are) still in Myanmar, we want to be ready in case there is a further exodus", said the UN's under secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, Mark Lowcock, in a Friday press briefing in Geneva.

Myanmar has tightly controlled access to the state since then, as the army kickback in the Buddhist-dominated country sent half a million Rohingyas fleeing to Bangladesh.

The violence, backed by radical Buddhist monks, has left scores of Rohingya villages torched and completely destroyed.

An estimated 2,000 refugees are still arriving in Bangladesh every day, according to the International Organisation for Migration.

Aid agencies have warned of a malnutrition crisis with about 281,000 people in Bangladesh in urgent need of food, including 145,000 children under five and more than 50,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Some 515,000 Rohingya have arrived in Bangladesh from Myanmar's western state of Rakhine in an unrelenting movement of people that began after Myanmar security forces responded to Rohingya militant attacks with a brutal crackdown.

Former Labour MP Chris Carter is the United Nations official in charge of Rakhine State.

Myanmar has come under worldwide criticism for barring aid groups, journalists and other outsiders from independently traveling to the region to see the situation there.

The Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs called for unimpeded access, and said a United Nations team should be able to get on the ground in Rakhine in the next few days.

Hindus and ethnic Rakhine were also among the dead.

Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has faced criticism for not doing more to stop the violence, although a military-drafted constitution gives her no power over the security forces.

"I think the way India is now approaching on the Rohingya issue, we are extremely happy", Bangladesh foreign secretary Shahidul Haque said.
