Passengers panic as AirAsia flight plunges over 6000m in mid-air scare

Passengers described the momentary panic as'terrifying as they thought they were going to die

Thankfully, the flight touched down safely again in Perth shortly after.

Claire Askew mentioned that the passengers were panic-stricken after seeing the reaction of the crew members, who, she said, looked "tearful and shocked".

"Now, I get it, but we looked to them for reassurance and we didn't get any, we were more anxious because of how panicked they were", Clare Askew was quoted as saying.

"We look to them for reassurance and we didn't get any".

Previously, The Sydney Morning Herald news portal reported that the passengers described how they were instructed to adopt the brace position and use their oxygen masks.

AirAsia Indonesia say engineers are examining the aircraft now, trying to work out what went wrong. It is not yet clear what caused the problem.

"We commend our pilots for landing the aircraft safely and complying with standard operating procedure", AirAsia Group head of safety Capt. Ling Liong Tien said, according to NBC News.

Barcelona ready to renew their pursuit of Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho
Barcelona bigwig Oscar Grau suggested earlier this week that the La Liga heavyweights could launch a January raid for Coutinho. The Times' Paul Joyce, elaborating on Grau's comments, said that " Liverpool will be angered" by Barcelona's renewed efforts.

Data from FlightRadar, a website which tracks flights globally using GPS, shows the plane descended 7,250 metres in the space of nine minutes. Passengers also saw oxygen masks drop after the lost cabin air pressure.

Passengers interviewed by 9NEWS said they picked up their phones and started texting goodbye messages to loved ones as they thought they were going to die.

"There was no real panic before that, but then everyone panicked", added Mark Bailey, another passenger.

'The safety of our guests is our utmost priority, ' the statement said, adding that the airline 'apologises for any inconvenience caused'.

An AirAsia flight over the weekend plunged 24,000 feet, causing some of the crew to panick, which upset passengers, over what was later determined to be a technical issue, according to CNN.

It is the latest incident for AirAsia which was hit by another drama on a Perth flight earlier this year.

Over the past few months, several flights have been forced back to Australia, including a Qantas flight that returned when its wing flaps could not be retracted, a Johannesburg-bound flight that discovered a crack in the windscreen and an AirAsia Gold Coast flight that was involved in a suspected bird strike.
