Turkey welcomes Hamas-Fatah reconciliation

Palestinians take part in a rally to support of the Palestinian reconciliation in Gaza city on 10 October 2017

Reconciliation could also pose a dilemma for global efforts to reach an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal since Hamas has not recognized Israel, unlike the Abbas-led Palestine Liberation Organization.

Abbas welcomed the deal in comments to AFP and said he considered it a "final agreement to end the division"-though many details remain to be resolved and previous reconciliation attempts have repeatedly failed".

According to Saudi-owned Asharq al-Awsat, which cited Palestinian sources, Hamas and Fatah have said they will not act unilaterally on either peace deals or armed conflict. But instead, the worldwide community should have tried to "pull Hamas into a dialogue", Blair said in an interview for Donald Macintyre's "Gaza: Preparing for Dawn", which is set to be released in November.

"Israel insists that the PA not allow any base whatsoever for Hamas terrorist actions from PA areas in Yehudah or Shomron or from Gaza, if the PA indeed takes responsibility for its territory".

Israel, along with the so-called Middle East Quartet - the United States, the European Union, the United Nations and Russian Federation - has said it opposes any Palestinian unity government if Hamas does not renounce terrorism, accept Israel's right to exist, and accept previous Israeli-Palestinian agreements.

Netanyahu also said Thursday that reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas will make "peace much harder to achieve", hours after the Palestinian faction Fatah and the rival terror group Hamas signed a unity deal in Cairo in a bid to end a decade-long rift.

A civilian also died in firing by security forces on a mob that had taken to the streets to protest the death of the militants. According to local Kashmiri media, the protesters raised high-pitched anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.

Attempts at reconciliation in recent years fell apart. Hamas and Israel fought three wars over the past decade.

The figure is however a fraction of the more than 20,000 police officers employed separately by Hamas.

Also as part of the agreement, the Palestinian Authority can not take any new steps regarding Israel.

In an interview with The Observer, the former Prime Minister said: "In retrospect I think we should have, right at the very beginning, tried to pull [Hamas] into a dialogue and shifted their positions". It is unclear whether that unresolved issue will delay Abbas' government's return to Gaza.

How does Israel see the Palestinian reconciliation? One of the key sticking points will be the fate of Hamas's 25,000-strong military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades.
