Vehicle hits pedestrians outside London's Natural History Museum, at least 11 hurt

Natural History Museum

Near Natural history Museum in Central London, a vehicle drove onto the sidewalk, the incident resulted in several people injured.

"Enquiries have established that this incident is not terrorist related and I'd like to thank those who came to assist the injured", he said.

Most people caught up in the crash were treated for leg and head injuries, the London Ambulance Service said.

The woman, who was thought to be in her 30s, was arrested on suspicion of trespass, and is being held at a London police station, but the Met said the incident was not being treated as terror-related.

Witnesses said the driver was pulled from the auto and detained by bystanders while police were called.

Several people were injured in the incident at Exhibition Road, which took place just after 2:40 p.m. local time (1340 UTC) on Saturday.

The Natural History Museum confirmed the incident and said they were working with the Metropolitan Police.

Witnesses and footage posted on social media suggested the man was pinned down on the ground by passers-by in the busy tourist spot.

One video online showed a man being restrained on the ground in the middle of Exhibition Road.

Al Jazeera's Neave Barker, reporting from London, said that armed units and forensic teams rushed to the scene after the incident.

"Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing", the Metropolitan Police said. A spokeswoman for the London force said counter-terrorism officers were assessing the incident but had not yet reached a conclusion as to the circumstances.

"It is a road traffic collision", they said.

Britain is on its second-highest security alert level, meaning that an attack by militants is considered highly likely.

The Natural History Museum is in the bustling section of South Kensington, popular with both Londoners and tourists.

The collision raised concerns after a series of terror attacks this year in London involving vehicles ramming pedestrians.

Panicky scenes ensued after the pedestrians were struck and it took almost four hours for police to reassure the anxious public that it was not another terrorist attack.
