Will Higher Prices Tune Out Subscribers — Netflix

Netflix Quietly Raises Its Subscription Prices

After the streaming service increased its price in October 2015, the number of subscribers went from 44.7 million to 52.7 million as of the end of last month.

With the latest hikes, Premium accounts are now more costly than Hulu's commercial-free plan ($11.99 per month). Premium tier pricing will increase from $11.99 to $13.99.

The basic plan, which allows single-screen streaming only, will stay at $7.99 per month.

In May of 2014 Netflix sent word out to it's subscribers that it was raising prices, something they had dropped hints about a month earlier.

Netflix has already started raising the cost for new customers in the U.S. All subscribers will likely be notified at least 30 days in advance of their price hike. Netflix's 4K streaming plan, which provides higher-quality content, will cost $14 per month, a $2 increase. For subscribers who have the plan that allows for two screens to watch in HD at the same time, the price is going up from $9.99 to $10.99 each month. Netflix has raised the rates on two of their subscription plans, with the new rates going into effect for November. United Kingdom pricing has yet to be confirmed but we will update when we hear more on that front. "I don't think we see it yet".

Netflix (NFLX) stock hit a record high on Thursday after the internet television network revealed price hikes for two out of three of its US streaming plans. The company expects to spend almost $7 billion on content for its service next year, including movies, TV series and comedy specials.

The fare hikes go into effect for new US members today.

As for investors, it seems they are pleased to see the price adjustment (for now).
