Australia votes Yes in same-sex marriage survey

The Senate could begin debating changes to the Marriage Act as early as this week if the'Yes vote comes out on top

Almost 80 per cent of eligible Australians took part in the voluntary poll and the outcome will be announced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics at 10am on Wednesday.

The votes have been counted, and this is what Australia voted for in the same-sex marriage postal vote.

"A Yes result would be a massive win for people power - millions of us sent back a Yes vote not just for marriage equality but also for fairness and love", she said.

The results of the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey were announced on Wednesday morning by the head of the Australian Bureau of Statistics David Kalisch, ending a divisive four-month campaign.

This would lead to a parliamentary debate and a vote to determine the legalisation of same-sex marriage.

"I don't believe Australians would welcome, and certainly the Government. would not countenance making legal, discrimination that is illegal, that is unlawful today", he said.

Nevertheless, discussions are well under underway as to how same-sex marriage might be legislated.

If Turnbull has fumbled a basic human rights issue that other comparable countries like New Zealand have already resolved just to appease a conservative but vocal minority faction fronted by ex-PM Tony Abbott, then he will have miscalculated the generosity Australians feel towards his increasingly tenuous government.

GST Council recommendations will benefit people: Modi
Currently, GST is levied at 12 per cent on non-AC restaurants, while it is 18 per cent for air-conditioned ones. Value Added Tax (VAT) will continue to be charged for alcohol, which does not fall under GST.

"I don't agree with the Prime Minister that this (James Paterson) bill makes activities which are now illegal legal", Nationals Senator Matt Canavan told ABC radio.

But marriage equality advocates have slammed any moves to imposed new conditions on the LGBTQ community.

A private bill, proposed by West Australian Liberal senator Dean Smith, has been labelled the "starting point" by senior government ministers.

Paterson's bill could override all anti-discrimination laws passed by state and territory level legislatures.

A handful of MPs have vowed to ignore the public's will and vote against the bill anyway, but they are few and far between.

The results of Malcolm Turnbull government's postal survey on same-sex marriage have been announced.

The prime minister has said he'll urge his lawmakers to pass legislation by the end of the year if results due November 15 show a majority support change.
