Black Friday Broke Background-Check Record

Black Friday was big business for retailers, with companies raking in $7.9 billion in online sales alone on Thanksgiving and the day after-up 17.9% from a year ago.

A new single day record was set on Black Friday when more than 200,000 requests for background checks for gun purchases.

The figure smashes the previous two years' figures for background checks done on a single day. By a year ago, it had conducted more than 27 million - a record.

The actual number of guns is poised to be even higher: gun checks, which are federally mandated for gun purchases, are run on a single buyer and not the individual guns purchased.

The boost in gun sales comes as firearms makers slash prices because of an inventory glut built up after the industry increased production amid fears the Obama administration would tighten gun control laws. However, a 2015 Time magazine report suggested that mass shootings could increase gun sales: "Spikes in gun sales regularly occur following mass shootings, often over concerns of increased gun regulation or because people are looking for increased protection", Time reported.

According to CNN, firearms dealers were hoping that rebates and deep discounts would lure in customers on Black Friday and boost recently slagging sales.

A total of 26 people were killed November 5 when a gunman opened fire on people at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions last week ordered a review of the FBI's background check system after a gunman led a carnage in a small southern Texas church, killing 26 people with multiple firearms purchased in spite of previous convictions.

The NCIS is to created to allow instant background checks on prospective gun owners.

Kelley, who had served the Air Force, was allowed to purchase a rifle after Air Force officials had failed to furnish Federal Bureau of Investigation with his court-martial, therefore granting Kelley the right to buy the firearms which he had used in the shooting.

The review will examine whether other government agencies are failing to report information to the database.
