Chrissy Teigen fails at boycotting Twitter's new update

President Donald Trump has already gotten the hang of longer tweets

To the consternation of many, Twitter announced on November 8 that all its users would henceforth be able to tweet with 280 characters.

"During the first few days of the test, many people tweeted the full 280 limit because it was new and novel, but soon after behaviour normalised", wrote Aliza Rosen, Twitter's product manager. Because Twitter users for the last 11 years have been habituated to the 140-character limit, lengthier posts may not seem quite right to current users, at least not yet.

Until this week, only a select group of Twitter users were able to tweet past the 140 character count in a trial period.

Twitter hopes the longer limit will make its service more approachable for more people. Now, the 280 character feature has been rolled out for the entirety of the platform.

On Thursday, Twitter said that it would be stopping all "general verifications" and said that a blue tick wasn't an endorsement They wrote in a message: "Verification was meant to authenticate identity & voice but it is interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance".

Trump administration ends immigration program protecting Central Americans from deportation

The world famous writers post - using exactly 140 characters - attracted a huge response from her fans and followers including other renowned novelists.

Whilst one half of Twitter is seemingly celebrating the news, some have complained that they instead wanted an edit button.

Many people had pointed out that 280 characters, despite what chief executive Jack Dorsey said in his own longer tweet announcing the change, just doesn't lend itself to the same focus.

Only 1% of test users' tweets in English ran into the character limit, compared to 9% previously.

"We - and many of you - were concerned that timelines may fill up with 280 character Tweets, and people with the new limit would always use up the whole space". Only five percent of users went above 140 characters during the test, and only 2 percent ever went north of 190 characters.
