Ex- Trump aide Flynn investigated over plot to kidnap Turkish dissident

A political enemy to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan cleric Fethullah Gulen could have been whisked out of the country by Michael Flynn and his son sources of the Wall Street Journal say

Former White House National Security Adviser Mike Flynn and his son were proposed $15 million to abduct Fethullah Gulen in Pennsylvania to illegally return him back to Turkey, according to Wall Street Journal's (WSJ) sources on Friday.

Friday's report describes a second meeting involving both Flynns at the 21 Club restaurant, a prohibition-era NY speakeasy patronised by Trump, in mid-December.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's team of investigators is looking into a pre-election meeting that took place in 2016 between then-Trump campaign adviser Michael Flynn and Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), who has often been described as "Putin's favorite congressman".

While his investigation is focused on Russian meddling, Mueller has a broad mandate and has honed in on Flynn's activities as Trump's lead national security advisor.

Special prosecutor Robert Mueller is examining a meeting Flynn had with senior Turkish officials weeks after Donald Trump won the presidential race past year, NBC News and the Wall Street Journal reported.

Rohrabacher, a California Republican who has become notorious for his efforts to advance Russian interests as a member of the United States Congress, recently had his travel privileges restricted over fears that he has been compromised by Russian intelligence officials.

Flynn also allegedly discussed helping to free Reza Zarrab, a Turkish-Iranian gold trader who now faces federal charges for his assistance to Iran in skirting United States sanctions.

Flynn resigned almost three weeks after Sally Yates, the acting attorney general at the time, warned the White House that Flynn could be vulnerable to Russian blackmail over his conversations with Russia's ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak.

In a February meeting shortly after Flynn resigned, Trump asked the FBI director at the time, James Comey, to "let this go", referring to an FBI investigation into Flynn. The White House has distanced itself from the men charged by Mueller - Papadopoulos, former campaign manager Paul Manafort and his business associate Rick Gates.

The Journal reported that Federal Bureau of Investigation agents asked at least four people about a December meeting in NY where Flynn and Turkish government representatives discussed removing Gulen, according to people with knowledge of the FBI's inquiries.

Flynn's lawyers Robert Kelner, Stephen Anthony and Brian Smith said: "Out of respect for the process of the various investigations regarding the 2016 campaign, we have intentionally avoided responding to every rumour or allegation raised in the media. But today's news cycle has brought allegations against General Flynn, ranging from kidnapping to bribery, that are so outrageous and prejudicial that we are making an exception to our usual rule: they are false", they wrote in a statement.
