Intel CPU packaged with AMD GPU to take on Nvidia

Gaming gear

The two rival chipmakers are teaming up on a new microprocessor that combines Intel's Core architecture with a custom graphics core from AMD.

Don't bother checking your calendar, we are still in November and this is not an April Fools' Day prank.

This chip will power a new breed of portable notebooks that can deliver discrete performance-tier graphics experiences in AAA games.

Using Intel's 8th generation Core processor and an AMD Radeon graphics processor, the duo are trying to "appeal to serious gamers", according to an AMD spokesperson. These systems average 26 mm in thickness whereas the modern premium laptops are trending down to 16 mm or less. "We wanted to find a way to improve this". It'll feature second generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2) and an Intel-exclusive, semi-custom discrete graphics chip from AMD's Radeon Technologies Group, all of which will be rolled into a single processor package.

The new chip will be targeted for laptops that are created to be thin and portable, but will also be powerful enough for gamers who need that extra power for intense games.

For now, Intel and AMD aren't giving technical details behind the new chip, like how fast the cores on it will run.

The Indian openers who notched up a match-winning partnership of 158 runs in the previous game failed to click today at Rajkot. For India, the only other bowler to find success was Mohammad Siraj who picked up the wickets of Kane Williamson.

"Our collaboration with Intel expands the installed base for AMD Radeon GPUs and brings to market a differentiated solution for high-performance graphics", said Scott Herkelman, vice president and general manager, AMD Radeon Technologies Group. While Intel has been in the discrete graphics business for years, it's never been able to fend off Nvidia in the way that AMD has with its Radeon GPUs. But there was one piece missing: Discrete graphics. This allows information to pass more quickly in "extreme close proximity". This is key in reducing the height requirements, and also cuts down on manufacturing and design complexities.

Laptops using this new chip could give manufacturers a significant boost in power while dedicating more space to other components or slimming devices down.

There are no specific performance numbers yet but these new Core H-series processors should start showing up in laptops at some point in Q1 2018.

The new AMD-Intel product will enable sleeker, thinner devices for high-performance computing applications, such as gaming.

This collaboration brings up several questions that will be answered in time. Nvidia holds almost 80% of the market for stand-alone graphics chips by revenue, in direct competition with AMD, and competes with Intel on artificial intelligence chips for large corporations, the Wall Street Journal noted.
