Investigation underway into fatal blasts, fire at NY cosmetics factory

At least 26 employees and seven firefighters were injured, according to News12.

Thirty-three people were left injured and one is missing after a series of explosions rocked a NY cosmetics factory.

Hazardous materials teams also responded, Green said. New Windsor town Supervisor George Green told The Associated Press firefighters were caught in the building when a second explosion occurred. One firefighter was taken to the hospital with severe burns to his face, officials said.

Up to 35 people were being treated for injuries, including seven firefighters, a lot of them from the nearby city of Newburgh, Town Supervisor George Green said.

Multiple explosions have been reported at a cosmetics factory in New Windsor as emergency crews fight a blaze tearing through the factory.

The explosions occurred about 25 minutes apart at Verla International in the Orange County town of New Windsor, 55 miles north of New York City.

"Following today's chemical explosion, I am directing a multi-agency investigation to get to the bottom of what happened and review compliance with state labor and environmental laws", he said in a statement.

Verla International makes nail polish, lotions, perfumes and other cosmetic products, according to its website. There are almost 400 employees working for the company, but it's unclear how many were on site when the incident occurred.
