Irish rail strike to hit cross-border services

A stoppage is expected today with no trains operating across Intercity Dart and commuter routes

Unions had sought annual pay increases of about 3.75 per cent - similar to the rises secured by workers at Dublin Bus and Luas after strikes previous year.

"We now look forward to working with Southern Rail to restore good industrial relations and deliver the service passengers in the region deserve".

NBRU General-Secretary Dermot O'Leary said while the talks are "a potential step forward", he added: "It should be borne in mind that the intransigence displayed by Irish Rail management, led it should be said the CEO, together with tacit support from the Department of Transport, will make an overall resolution to this dispute more hard than it might otherwise have been".

Mick Whelan, ASLEF's general secretary, said: "The agreement means we will have a second safety-trained person on every train covered by this agreement except in exceptional circumstances".

Employees are also losing out on pay while they strike.

The biggest disruption is threatened at SWR, which only took over the franchise from South West Trains in August, with more than a third of services set to be hit. The on-board service concept has been welcomed by our passengers across the board.

Mike Evans suspended one game for drilling Marshon Lattimore
That sparked a skirmish, and Evans was flagged for unnecessary roughness when the teams were eventually separated. Evans, the Bucs wide receiver, was not removed from the game, which New Orleans went on to win, 30-10.

"Rather than scheduling further industrial action beyond that, we would urge our trade unions to take the opportunity, listen to the request of the Labour Court and stop this disruption to customers".

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: "The only way that Greater Anglia can be running these services is through taking serious risks with public safety just as they did during the last phase of strike action".

"Driver-only operation has been operating safely for 32 years and now accounts for over a third of the United Kingdom rail network".

The dispute has spread to South Western Railway because the RMT is seeking assurances about working practices when a new fleet of suburban trains are introduced in 2019.

Merseyrail: Most services will run between 7am and 7pm, but there will be a break in service during the middle of the day, and some stations will be closed.

The resolution announcement came as Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) members continued with their strike on Southern Rail and four other networks on Wednesday.
