Klopp pleased by Liverpool patience in Maribor win

Klopp admits that Liverpool's defensive problems won't be solved by two marquee signings

It took a while, but Liverpool finally got a scoreline that befits the fixture.

Jurgen Klopp's side are hardly charging towards their target - despite the 7-0 thrashing of the Slovenians a fortnight ago - and this match reflected their incremental progress in Group E.

However, only goal difference separates the Reds from Spartak Moscow while third-placed Sevilla are only one point behind on four points so the group couldn't be tighter heading in to tonight's games.

James Milner missed a second-half penalty after Roberto Firmino was fouled but Can put the result beyond doubt to secure Liverpool's second win of the group stage.

The cushion of a second goal arrived in the 64th minute when Emre Can played a swift one-two with Milner before confidently driving home from the edge of the box.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was handed a rare start in the absence of injured Philippe Coutinho and the England man had the first opening, seeing a shot blocked by Jean-Claude Billong.

Duterte would welcome Trump 'in the most righteous way'
The two leaders also discussed the situation in the South China Sea, where China is stepping up military buildup. Lopez said his request to remove the tariffs would be the subject of future discussions.

After their previous battering in Slovenia there was no chance Maribor were going to risk a similar performance, sitting back in a 5-4-1 formation very similar to that of Huddersfield in the first half on Saturday.

Substitute Daniel Sturridge made it 3-0 in the final minute when he was spotted, unmarked at the back post by Alberto Moreno following a short corner and had time to control before firing home.

Maribor's gritty resistance was broken a mere three minutes after the restart, however.

Liverpool also missed a penalty for the second consecutive game as Milner's effort was tipped onto the post by a full-stretch Handanovic.

However, summer signing Mohamed Salah ended Maribor's resistance in the 49th minute with a deft finish to calm Liverpool's nerves at Anfield.

As in that win over the Terriers, Liverpool had to remain patient against a team defending deep and Klopp was keen to praise the patience his side showed.
