Markets stay flat even as Sensex, Nifty face more losses

Indian shares ended a choppy session slightly higher on Friday after the GST Council pruned tax rates on many mass consumption items such as chocolates, shampoo, detergents, nutrition drinks, marble and cosmetics.

Heavyweights like SBI, M&M, Oil India, Nestle India, Allahabad Bank, BEML, Bank of India, BPCL, Bosch, DLF, Dena Bank, HSIL, Hindustan Copper, IL&FS Transportation among others are scheduled to report their quarterly earnings during the day.

At 9.15 a.m., the 30-share BSE index Sensex was down 15.18 points at 33,235.75 and the 50-share NSE index Nifty was down 14.45 points at 10,294.50.

About 1,480 shares declined against 1,197 advancing shares on the BSE. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.3 per cent and in close reach of a 10-year high set the previous day. "European indices like FTSE 100, DAX and CAC 40 traded lower", Jasani added.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 lost 0.38 per cent while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.58 per cent.

On Thursday, an upward rally in the S&P BSE consumer durables index and value buying led the benchmark indices to close on a flat-to-positive note.

Major Sensex losers were: Tata Motors, down 4.01 per cent at Rs 422.65; Reliance Industries, down 2 per cent at Rs 883.50; Tata Motors (DVR), down 1.99 per cent at Rs 241.25; Asian Paints, down 1.57 per cent at Rs 1,176.45; and Sun Pharma, down 1.42 per cent at Rs 527.30.
