According to the Zimbabwe constitutional watchdog, Veritas, it is possible to impeach Mugabe but some legal experts say it is a hard process.

Mr Mugabe's ruling Zanu-PF party has also threatened to begin impeachment proceedings against him after sacking him as its leader on Sunday.

The reports note that Moyo is believed to be the brains behind the so-called G40 faction that has allegedly been masterminding the expulsion of liberation war heroes in ZANU-PF, including Mnangagwa, and pushing for Grace to succeed her husband.

In a televised address late Sunday, the 93-year-old president had flouted expectations he would step down after the military's takeover, pitching the country into a second week of political crisis.

Instead, Mugabe stressed that he was still in power and would preside over the upcoming Zanu-PF elective conference.

The notice from Mugabe's chief secretary says the meeting will be at State House at 9 a.m. and all ministers "should attend".

"We are expecting the motion to be moved tomorrow, the committee to be set up tomorrow, and hopefully by Wednesday - because the charges are so clear - we expect that by Wednesday, we should be able to vote in parliament", Mr Mangawana said.

Having been sacked by his party, Mugabe has run out of options but appears to be steadfastly clinging to the very last vestiges of power.

National Football League responds to Jerry Jones's request to hold special owners meeting
It's because Jones sees the Elliott suspension as "an unforgivable breach" of his trust in Goodell. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell , left, and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones .

The war veterans claimed that Mugabe swapped speeches to avoid resigning during the address to the nation.

The University of Zimbabwe postponed exams on Monday after students started chanting and singing songs against Mugabe.

Mpofu also said they were meeting with a "heavy heart because Mugabe's wife and her close associates have taken advantage of his frail condition, and abused the resources of the country".

Worth noting, as they ponder about that future, is the undeniable fact that Mugabe's authoritarian rule was a result of the absence of strong, independent institutions that should have kept his leadership in check - through checks and balances.

This came as legislators have also scaled up preparations for Mugabe's impeachment today.

Former vice president Joyce Mujuru, one of the people expelled in 2014, who has since formed a party, was not reinstated.

If that were to happen, other sections of the constitution mandate that the person who was last acting president shall take office for a period of 90 days while the ruling party selects a replacement from its own ranks to see out the term of office.

The army stepped in citing grave security concerns following months of rampant infighting in the ruling party over President Mugabe's succession which had led to unprecedented dismissals of party members, including two vice presidents, one just last week. We will stage a sit in until Mugabe is gone. The quick-tempered first lady, deeply unpopular among Zimbabweans for her lavish spending, did not accompany the president Friday and was not pictured in photographs of State House negotiations.
