SC dismisses plea against release of 'Padmavati' outside India

"When the matter is pending before the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for grant of certificate, nobody holding a responsible position should comment as it would amount to violation of the principle of the rule of law".

Ace comedian Kapil Sharma, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film Firangi, has come out in support of filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus Padmavati.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra dismissed the fresh petition that had sought an order to restrain the producers of the movie from releasing it overseas. "It will prejudice decision making of the CBFC". BJP Madhya Pradesh chief Nandkumar Singh Chauhan called Bhansali a "sinner" for "tampering history", while CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said Padmavati would not be released in MP even if cleared by the Censors.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a fresh plea seeking to stall the release of "Padmavati" outside India. Vijay Rupani, the CM of Gujarat was the first to ban the movie in the state, citing the reason of law and order.

The bench which also comprised Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud termed Sharma's plea as "misconceived", but did not impose cost on the lawyer, considering he has been a practising lawyer of the apex court, the report added.

There are certain people from the Rajput community and they believe that if they allow the movie "Padmavati" to get released then it would be a great damage to the social harmony. The movie features Deepika Padukone in the title role as Rani Padmini, alongside Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji, Shahid Kapoor as MaharajaRawal Ratan Singh, Jim Sarbh, and Aditi Rao Hydari.
