Rockford police officer killed during traffic stop

Officers responded and found a single vehicle crash approximately two blocks away from the initial traffic stop.

A police officer and another man both died after a single-vehicle crash in northern IL, authorities said.

Rockford police Chief Dan O'Shea says the dead officer, 30-year-old Jaimie Cox, called for backup after making a traffic stop about 1 a.m. Sunday.

"The investigation is still ongoing and very active", O'Shea said at around 6 a.m., adding, "We do not believe we have any public at risk at this point".
