Safety group finds lead in some fidget spinners

Fidget spinners sold at Target contain lead, advocacy group says

Target is selling a fidget spinner with 330 times the federal legal lead level limit for toys, according to a new report.

In recent lab results, the U.S. PIRG Education Fund found two fidget spinners sold at Target have "extremely high levels of lead".

"The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reviewed and explicitly defined fidget spinners as 'general use products.' They are not defined by the CPSC as toys", said Target spokesman Lee Henderson, per CBS News. Additionally, online the "Fidget Wild Spinner Premium Brass" is labeled for ages "six and up".

"Target's VP of corporate responsibility told BI that the two fidget spinners are ".clearly marked on the package "appropriate for customer's 14 and older" and are not marketed to children".

Lead exposure can be extremely risky for children, potentially impacting mental development among other risks. It can affect almost every body system.

If you've purchased these toys and are anxious about lead exposure, U.S. PIRG is advising consumers to stop using the two fidget spinner models immediately, and to place them in a bag out of reach of children.

Los Angeles Rams vs New York Giants
After the Rams scored touchdowns on their first two possessions of the second half, the outcome had been decided. Higbee, not normally used as a receiver, opened the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown grab 4:05 into the contest.

Kara Cook-Shultz, toxics director at US PIRG, said regardless of how the CPSC classifies them, spinners are marketed as toys for kids and sold in toy aisles. They say the product isn't a toy and is not marketed to young kids, so it's fine.

The research revealed some of the spinners could contain as much as 300 times the federal limit for lead in children's products.

The two brands of fidget spinners identified by USPIRG were the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass and the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal.

PRIG is calling for Target to issue a recall on the fidget spinners. The report did not address whether there have been any injuries after a product purchase.

Target and the company that distributes the spinners, Bulls-i-Toy, both stressed that the spinner is not a toy, and thus doesn't fall under the CPSC rules. "All of our product [s] are tested and comply with CPSC safety standards".

Target has failed to comment about why they would sell a product that could be unsafe for children or adults.
