'Send nudes': Facebook builds database to stop revenge porn

Facebook is trying to combat “revenge porn” by encouraging users to submit their nude

Facebook is trying to combat "revenge porn" by encouraging users in Australia to submit their nude photos to a pilot project created to prevent intimate images from being shared without consent.

Facebook is doing this in partnership with Australian government agency eSafety in order to try to prevent people from sharing intimate images without consent.

There are actual human beings in this world who decide that the best course of action to spite their ex is to publically post a nude image of them on Facebook. Clifford Neuman has taken a first look at the new Facebook pilot program in Australia that will also come to the U.S. The program is a protection tool.

Julie Inman Grant, Australia's e-Safety commissioner, said the company will not store the images permanently as after they are processed into a hash, the code is all that will remain.

Once Facebook receives notice of the image, their community operations team will use image-matching technology to prevent the image from being uploaded or shared online.

The company has said it will store the images for a short time before deleting them.

Study shows sheep can recognize celebrity faces
The paper points out that some neurodegenerative diseases can harm the ability to perceive faces, like Huntington's Disease. Past research has shown that horses, dogs, and even mockingbirds can discern between individuals of other species.

In response to the revelations, Facebook introduced a feature that tagged pictures reported to it as revenge porn using photo-matching technology.

The pilot program is also available in the US, the United Kingdom and Canada, according to CNBC.

The pilot is meant to help prevent "revenge porn", or having intimate images shared across the social network without the owner's permission.

If a user thinks she might be a potential revenge porn target, she contacts e-Safety, which then instructs the user to upload any suggestive photos and/or videos she thinks might be used against her into Facebook Messenger.

"Once we hash the photo, we notify the person who submitted the report via the secure email they provided to the eSafety Commissioner's office and ask them to delete the photo from the Messenger thread on their device", Davis writes.

It will then be up to the sender to delete the image.
