Some fidget spinners may contain unsafe amounts of lead

Report shows high levels of lead in certain fidget spinners

The U.S. Public Interest Research Group (USPIRG) and the Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group (MASSPIRG) issued a warning to parents Thursday that fidget spinners being sold at Target stores nationwide were found to have high levels of lead.

Consumer Advocacy group, The U.S. Public Interest Research Groups, claims Target is selling two types of spinners that have 330 times the acceptable amount of lead for young children.

USA Today said the company could not provide an estimate on how numerous popular fidget spinner toys it will have to remove from stores. The other (metal) tested for 1,300 ppm.

The federal legal limit on lead in children's products manufactured after August 2011 is 100 parts per million for any accessible parts, with an exception for metal components of bicycles, which are not supposed to have more than 300 parts per million of lead.

The toy remains on Target shelves, as the companies defend their product with the Consumer Product Safety Commission's declaration that fidget spinners are not technically "children's products" subject to legal limits for lead.

A toy that spun out of control in popularity is now being called into question for its potential lead levels.

The app said the badges can be applied to any properties or businesses that have been or will be reviewed. She claims she left under the guise that the hotel would be pursuing a case against her alleged attacker.

Following the US PIRG report yesterday, CPSC Commissioner Elliot Kaye, who was chairman of the government watchdog until earlier this year, noted over Twitter: "Seems obvious fidget spinners are toys and should comply with all applicable federal safety standards".

"While these two products comply with all CPSC guidelines for fidget spinners, based on the concerns raised, we're removing them from our assortment", said Jenna Reck, senior communications manager at Target. Both test results were given to the CPSC, Target and Bulls i Toy.

Two of those came back with high levels of lead.

Kara Cook-Schultz, toxics director for the U.S. PIRG Education Fund, said while the spinners might not be officially classified as toys, in practice they often are.

In the meantime, U.S. PIRG still recommends for adults and children to stop using the fidget spinners. The process to remove the two fidget spinners from Target stores began Friday.

"Alarmingly, when PIRG notified the CPSC about the elevated lead levels in the fidget spinners, the CPSC responded in an email that these fidget spinners are general use products, not children's products", the group said in its report.
