Tampa police arrest man in string of killings

Tampa police arrest and will charge suspect in 4 killings

Acting on a tip, detectives recovered a gun and found the suspect, identified as Howell Emmanuel Donaldson III, 24, at the McDonald's restaurant in Tampa's Ybor City neighborhood, WFLA reported.

The officer called the operations center, and police determined it was the same gun used in the four murders.

Donaldson was cooperative when he spoke with police and admitted he owned the gun, but never offered a motive.

"I applaud the relentless effort of Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan, Mayor Bob Buckhorn and every law enforcement officer who has worked around the clock and over the Thanksgiving holiday", he said.

Residents and police had been on edge since October 9, when 22-year-old Benjamin Mitchell was shot to death.

Donaldson had a brief stint as a walk-on player in the 2011-12 season for the Red Storm, school sources said.

Days later, the body of Monica Hoffa, 32, was found in a vacant lot on East New Orleans Avenue, about a half-mile from where Mitchell was shot.

U.S. shopping season starts with record high online sales
Average spend per person over the five-day period was $335.47, with $250.78, or about 75%, going toward gifts, according to NRF. More than 58 million people only shopped online during the long weekend, compared to 51 million who only shopped in stores.

"I'm optimistic about this one, but only time will tell", Tampa police Chief Brian Dugan said.

Donaldson's neighbors said Wednesday that they'd recently seen him playing basketball with his younger brother in the suburban driveway of the family's brick home. Donaldson attended St. John's University in Queens, graduating in January. "Well tonight, goodness has won ... tonight is the beginning of when justice will be served".

Mitchell's death was followed by the killings of Monica Hoffa on October 11, Anthony Taino Naiboa on October 19, and Ronald Felton on November 14.

The New York City Police Department confirmed to CBS News that Donaldson had been arrested in Manhattan in 2014, but released no further details, according to WTSP.

The reward for information leading to an arrest grew to $100,000 in the search for answers. He was seen casually walking in the Seminole Heights neighborhood looking down at a cell phone.

Tampa police were assisted by several other agencies including ATF, FBI, Florida Highway Patrol and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
