Trump Pauses The Decision On Importing African Elephant Trophies

A US Fish and Wildlife Service spokesman said the move would allow the two African countries to include US sport hunting as part of their management plans for the elephants and allow them to put "much-needed revenue back into conservation".

Earlier this week, the Trump Administration announced that the Obama era ban on importing elephant tusks and other trophies from Zambia and Zimbabwe would be lifted.

In fact, the reversal of the 2014 ban caused such an uproar that by the end of the day, President Trump tweeted that he had chose to reverse the reversal, writing, "Put big game trophy decision on hold until such time as I review all conservation facts".

US President Donald Trump has reinstated a ban on trophy hunting amid a public uproar.

In a rare about-face, US President Donald Trump has carried out an abrupt policy U-turn on the importation of big-game animal parts from Zimbabwe after a storm of public outrage.

The department said the move was created to help conservation.

Critics, however, note the restrictions were created by the Obama administration in 2014 because the African elephant population had dropped.

The African bush elephant is now listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, but a provision of the law allows for the import of trophies if it can be proved that hunting the animals contributes to conservation efforts.

Despite the outcry and Trump's stated reversal, the global affairs page of the US Fish and Wildlife Service still - as of Saturday morning local time - says it will issue permits for importing big game animal parts.

Trump tweeted late Friday that he was reversing course for the time being.

The Fish and Wildlife Service said it had made a decision to allow the imports because the government of Zimbabwe, non-governmental organizations, hunter associations and other groups had provided the service with additional information that addressed the concerns in the FWS' previous findings that led to the ban.

Donald Trump says he is halting a controversial change allowing the import of elephants killed by hunters overseas. "We need immediate federal action to reverse these policies and protect these fantastic animals".
