25 Nov is the International Day to End Violence against Women!

Although some progress has been made in preventing violence against women in the Americas, there is still "limited recognition of violence as a public health issue that imposes a significant burden for countries", health ministers from throughout the Americas heard at the Pan American Sanitary Conference in September. These dates are chosen to symbolically link the issue of violence against women with human rights, while emphasizing that abuse of women is a violation of these rights, stated a release. The data was compiled from 2005 to 2016 and included 87 countries. In 2012, "almost half of all women who were victims of intentional homicide worldwide were killed by an intimate partner or family member, compared to 6 percent of male victims". What the challenges that contribute to this ongoing acceptance of violence against women?

The UN in Afghanistan has called for united action by all Afghans to end violence against women and girls.

Saturday marks the start of the 16 days of activism to end gender-based violence around the world.

"It becomes just a part of life", said Mlambo-Ngcuka. "This moment has exposed how men in authority can become serial perpetrators..." Fourteen women died, while ten women and four men were injured. To achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, more vigorous efforts are required, including legal frameworks, to counter deeply rooted gender-based discrimination that often results from patriarchal attitudes and related social norms.

"Sanctions and accountability are critical for behavior change, and for the coming generations to be socialized differently, so that they know that this is not acceptable", said Mlambo-Ngcuka.

Orange is the official colour of the campaign, which is why various capitals around the world express their solidarity by lighting their main buildings in orange.

Countries should also continue the actions recommended in regional and global strategies and plans of action, and work to achieve the violence-related targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the report concluded.
