Twitter Verified Charlottesville White Nationalist Jason Kessler and People Are Freaking Out

Jack Dorsey

Jason Kessler, the organizer of the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August that left one woman dead, was verified on Twitter.

"Verification was meant to authenticate identity & voice but it is interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance", Twitter support said.

Jack Dorsey, the chief executive of Twitter, has said its "blue tick" verification process is "broken" after it verified the organiser of a far-right rally.

In the aftermath of Ms Heyer's death, he used the platform to call her a "fat, disgusting Communist" and described her murder as "payback time".

But many - including Yuh-Line Niou, a New York State Assembly member - are wondering why they still aren't verified while white nationalists like Kessler and Richard Spencer are. "We have paused all general verifications while we work and will report back soon".

PSG step up interest in Jose Mourinho
Traore played under Mourinho at Chelsea during the 2015/16 season, the Portuguese handing the striker his first-team debut.

Unfortunately for those of you awaiting your verification, Twitter seems to have listened to user criticism, at least this time.

Twitter verifies handles of influential celebrities, politicians, journalists, institutions and people known to have a huge following. According to Twitter, "a verified badge does not imply an endorsement", but tweets from verified users tend to appear near the top of searches, allowing information they contain to be disseminated faster.

Twitter users began protesting Kessler's verification shortly after it became public. In other words, if you're not newsworthy by Twitter's standards, you may be denied verification.

What all this information gets at is, as Twitter sees it, the point of verification: To prove that an account is authentic. For critics of Twitter's ongoing failure to effectively address the harassment that occurs on its platform, the move was viewed as yet another example that the social network is not taking the appropriate actions to police its platform.
